Description: A driver is releasing a jam built by logs floating downstream. A pike pole is used for this job. This picture was taken in the Green River area. The 4-foot logs have been debarked. The Drive would start as soon as spring thaw arrived and water level was high. It would last about fifteen days. Workers called it the "Grand Drive". During those two weeks, wood was thrown in the streams and was carried away by the current. Drivers guided the logs and released log jams. Timber, cut during winter, had to be driven on streams while water level was still high.
