Description: Drivers guided timber rafts standing on logs. This work was very dangerous. Days were long and drivers were exposed to bad weather. In this picture taken in the Green River area, a driver built a shelter made of branches and black paper. Notice that he is holding a peavey. That tool contained a moveable hook and was used for turning logs. At right, we see a pike pole that was used for handling logs.
